Yes, bamboo toothbrushes can get moldy if they are not properly cleaned. Be reminded that bamboo is an organic material, therefore it encourages the growth of mold faster than a plastic toothbrush. But we can’t get enough of explaining that using a bamboo toothbrush requires extra loving care.

Yes, moldy look ugly and dirty, for sure. But it only takes 3 steps to take good care of your bamboo toothbrush. The habit of tossing it in the cup right after brushing your teeth will be over after you learn the key to stop your bamboo toothbrush from getting moldy.

Basically the most important step in preventing moistness and mold is to dry the bristles and the handle with a towel. Simple as that. Because if you let your bamboo toothbrush soak in the cup, it’ll darken over the frequent use.

Where and how you store your bamboo toothbrush is also very relevant. The bathroom is a natural damp atmosphere, especially if the shower is used multiple times a day, which is common for a family or friends sharing an apartment. Consider keeping each bamboo toothbrush in separate cups or holders, in the open air to dry out.

Rinsing and drying out your bamboo toothbrush with the towel will help greatly but air temperature is also important. So do not enclose it afterwards in a bathroom cabinet, vanity case or even with a cap. Any of these will encourage the growth of mold. So storing your bamboo toothbrush upright in the open air will help to dry out in between uses and also to prevent bacteria buildup.

Be aware that giving this extra loving care to your bamboo toothbrush doesn’t extend its lifespan. You are simply ensuring regular maintenance to look good day after day until it’s time to replace it. But you do have to replace your bamboo toothbrush after 2 or 3 months as recommended by Dentists & Hygienists.

Yes. We do sell to retailers and wholesalers. Please ask us for commercial conditions through e-mail; info@nashonuma.com, Whatsapp, or messenger.

In order to keep your bamboo toothbrush clean you just need to rinse, dry and store it properly. It might look obvious but it’s like a mindfulness invitation in your oral care routine.

  1. Rinse the bristles with tap water, after brushing your teeth, to remove food debris and toothpaste foam.
  2. Dry the bamboo handle and the bristles with a towel.
  3. Store the bamboo toothbrush in a vented cup to avoid a pool of water at the bottom, which will create moldy effect.

Be reminded that plastic is impenetrable and bamboo is porous. Therefore a bamboo toothbrush gets darken easily after daily use if you don’t follow these 3 easy steps. We are confident that you’ll get in this eco-friendly habit in the twinkling of an eye.

Besides this daily care routine of your bamboo toothbrush, you may also try other cleaning tips. But note that there’s not clinical evidence that these natural methods are flawless.

  1. Boiling the bamboo toothbrush
  2. Disinfecting with vinegar or baking soda. In fact, is there anything that these two green ingredients do not clean? You just need to mix the water, baking soda and vinegar in a cup. Place the bamboo toothbrush head down, with bristles into the liquid. Allow the mixture to work its magic for around 15 minutes. And finally rinse the bamboo toothbrush under running water, rinse it and dry it thoroughly.

We would only recommend these methods when you decide to upcycle your worn-out toothbrush and reuse it.

Another important tip for you to know is that using a cap to protect toothbrush bristles is an urban myth. Meaning that instead of actually protecting the bristles it leads to growth of opportunistic microorganisms. It’s easy to understand that a cover maintains a moist environment and potentially breeds bacteria. So, the best way is to let the bamboo toothbrush air-dry upright or lying in a nice pebble.

Warning tip: Never put your bamboo toothbrush in the dishwasher or microwave, intending to destroy germs.

Using a bamboo toothbrush requires a bit more care than a plastic one. But you’ll feel rewarded for going green and loving the planet. Check out our 3 tips to learn how to care for your bamboo toothbrush.

  • TIP 1 – RINSE
  • TIP 2 – DRY
  • TIP 3 – STORE

Bamboo is an organic material whereas plastic is impenetrable. So we should keep your level of expectations regarding the appearance over time of use.

The wood color is light when your Nashonuma toothbrush is brand new. However, the handle will darken after daily use, because bamboo is naturally porous. You shouldn’t feel sad or disappointed. This is absolutely normal. Also, we have good news: if you follow 3 easy tips, you’ll be taking good care of your bamboo toothbrush.

Here are the 3 easy tips on how to care for a bamboo toothbrush

TIP 1 – RINSE

How to care for your bamboo toothbrush - Rinse

Enjoy brushing softly your teeth. Take it as a mindfulness moment. No rush is needed and your gums will thank you. Then, rinse the bristles with warm tap water, removing toothpaste suds or food debris.

TIP 2 – DRY

Dry both the bristles and handle with a towel. Please, do not skip this important step. Your toothbrush will appreciate this extra loving care.

Be aware that using a toothbrush cover is not the best practice. You should always let the head dry out between uses. Make it fun and give your brush a sunbath 🙂

Once in a while, you may want to clean thoroughly your toothbrush and you can do it with natural products. Never disinfect your toothbrush in the microwave or dishwasher.

TIP 3 – STORE

Place the toothbrush on top of your toothbrush holder or even a pebble to fully dry in between uses. This is also a cute way of storing. Or else, we highly recommend using a vented cup to avoid a pool of water in the bottom. Thus, preventing moist and dark handles.

Pretty nice and easy, don’t you agree?

Besides following these tips, we want you to be aware that the idea is not to extend the lifespan of your bamboo toothbrush. Regardless, the material, dentists & hygienists recommend replacing your toothbrush every 2/3 months. Last but not least, children’s toothbrushes often need replacing more frequently than adult brushes.

We wanted our whole product to be ecological, including the packaging. The toothbrush comes in a compostable wrapper made from plants. The outer box is made from 100% paper and is also biodegradable.

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth. Because it contains naturally-occurring antimicrobial agents, there is no need for using fertilizers or pesticides during its cultivation. Our bamboo is totally organic and wild. A few facts:

  • Fast-growing 💚 Bamboo is technically a kind of grass, and it grows like grass- sometimes up to three or four feet in one day. This means that there’s lots of it, and when it’s harvested it grows itself back again quickly enough not to leave a dent in the eco-system.
  • Absorbs CO2 💚 Bamboo absorbs greenhouse gases, and releases 35% more oxygen into the atmosphere than trees.
  • It keeps alive while serving us 💚 Bamboo roots remain in place after harvesting, thereby preventing soil erosion and retaining nutrients for the next crop.
  • Chemically untouched💚 It is completely natural. No chemicals are needed. No pesticides.
  • Job provision💚 Wherever it grows, it is vital to the local economy and to the local culture. In China, bamboo is known as ‘the friend of the people.
  • Surprising strength 💚 It is a whopping 34% harder than white oak, and 2.5. times more stable than commonly used wood.

The bristles are the only part of this product that are not biodegradable. They’re made of nylon 6 bpa free which is still the best way to grant good oral care. Until today the only 100% biodegradable and efficient option is pig hair, which is a very controversial material, and one that we chose not to use in the Nashonuma toothbrush. We will continue to work closely with our manufacturers to develop better alternatives. Until then, remove the bristles for proper recycled.

The handle is made out of 100% biodegradable bamboo and can be disposed in your composting bin or you can give it a 2nd usage (gardening, firewood,..). The bristles are made from nylon 6 bpa free and should be recycled with plastic. We recommend to cut them off or remove them with pliers. All other packaging materials are biodegradable (envelope without plastic, carton without glue, and protection bag made of paper)

Yes all of our products are vegan: no animal testing, no animal parts.

At Nashonuma Pakistan customer concerns are at the heart of our company policy. We store only the data that allow us to deliver your order to your address and do not share any data with 3rd parties.

Wood comes from a natural and renewable resource, which can also be sourced from sustainably managed stock trees (FSC certification is one example of a sustainably sourced certification).

Plastic on the other hand is a synthetic material sourced from fossil fuel feedstock.

The plastic found in the surface area of the ocean is a lot less than the amount of input, this missing amount indicates plastic consumption by marine creatures. If this cycle continues most of the marine creatures will be on the verge of extinction.

Wood emits lower carbon levels than plastic and is safer to use.

Our products are made of bamboo. Bamboo is a highly sustainable natural renewable resource. Plastic isn’t.

Plastic is killing a lot of wildlife, marine life and polluting a large part of our environment. Bamboo isn’t – or at least it isn’t yet.

Most bamboo can be composted. Plastic can never be composted. Only some plastic can be recycled and this uses large amounts of energy.

We keep looking for alternatives. For example, some of our products are also made of steel, and some are made of wheat.

The Nashonuma bamboo toothbrush bristles are made of nylon 6 bpa free. We are well aware that it is not yet the best eco-friendly solution. But it is still the best way to grant good oral care. Until today the only 100% biodegradable and efficient option is animal hair, which is a very controversial material, or else PLA. But according to our standards, these aren’t yet a good alternative.

In the earlier days of toothbrushes, way back in the Chinese Tang Dynasty (607-907) bristles were sourced from hogs, and later in the 13th century, they were made of horsetail hairs attached to ox bone handle.

It was a long journey until animal bristles were replaced by synthetic fibers, such as nylon, in 1938. Obviously, this event followed the rise of plastic and mass production, which has devastating effects on today’s environment.

At Nashonuma we stand by cruelty-free and vegan products. Therefore, using animal-sourced bristles is not an option. Furthermore, we are aware that the nylon bpa free bristles account for 5% of non-biodegradable product. So, we are working closely with our manufacturers to develop better solutions.

However, there’s good news: you can recycle the bamboo toothbrush bristles! When it’s time to dispose of your old bamboo toothbrush, you should remove the bristles with a pair of tweezers. Since they are too small, we strongly advise not to throw them in the big plastic recycling bin. Instead, you can reuse a plastic bottle and create an ecobrick, keeping all the tiny plastic waste tight in one place. In time you may discard it correctly.

Of course! Bamboo toothbrushes harbor bacteria. Did you think that all those germs would go down the drain every time you brush? Some go but others remain. Hey, there’s no reason to panic, as long as you remember to clean your bamboo toothbrush thoroughly and keep a healthy daily oral care.

Bacteria and germs are part of our lives. Our bodies have natural mechanisms to fight them efficiently. And what happens in our mouth does affect the whole body. So never underestimate your dental health and oral care.

Bamboo toothbrushes as plastic toothbrushes are a fertile breeding ground for a number of microorganisms. The problem is when there is an imbalance in the number of unhealthy bacteria versus the number of healthy ones. So you better take some precautions.

Be aware that these bacteria originate not only from our mouths but also from the environment where the toothbrushes are stored. Here are some guidelines to keep your bamboo toothbrush and most of all to maximize your dental health.

  • Rinse and dry thoroughly your bamboo toothbrush after each use.
  • Store your bamboo toothbrush upright in the open air (far and away from the toilet!)
  • Wash regularly the cup or holder where you store your bamboo toothbrush.
  • Avoid keeping your bamboo toothbrush in a closed cabinet.
  • When using a travel case, remember to dry the bamboo toothbrush very well.
  • Never share your bamboo toothbrush! Make sure you have different colours. We have such nice options with different hashtags that can identify each family member.
  • Soak your bamboo toothbrush in antibacterial mouthwash once in a while.
  • Flossing before brushing pushes away those nasty germs where bristles can’t fully reach.
  • Replace your bamboo toothbrush every 3-4 months, or sooner if you notice the bristles have become frayed with use.

Finally, along with the regular bamboo toothbrush maintenance, remember to eat right and do regular check-ups. Small actions leading to a healthier smile.
